About Kenneth A. Kimmel, LMFT

Kenneth Kimmel, Jungian psychoanalyst, writer, teacher and consultant, has maintained a private psychotherapy practice in Seattle since 1984. He is a founding member of The New School for Analytical Psychology while retaining membership in the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts.

He has engaged in a lifelong study of dreams, and as Director of The Pacific Northwest Center for Dream Studies worked with over thirty thousand dreams between 1984 until 2004. His fascination during graduate school with the symbols of initiation inherent in psychosis, dreams and other primary processes, led him in 1974 to observe and record shamanic rituals by the indigenous Maya of Guatemala, and the “healing sessions” of the “Spiritists” of Brazil. Upon his return he interned in an experimental psychiatric ward that used no medications for patients experiencing first-time psychotic episodes, where he conducted a year-long dream group on the ward. This period was seminal for him and laid a course for the rest of his life.
During analytic training and beyond, Ken served as past chair of the InterInstitute Committee of Seattle which provided a receptive space for candidates and analysts of the various analytic schools to share in both the diversity and common ground inherent to our evolving ideas. Kenneth has taught and lectured throughout the US and internationally, and is author of Eros and the Shattering Gaze: Transcending Narcissism, (Fisher King Press, 2011). Most recently he presented a paper at the 2016 Congress of the International Association for Analytical Psychology, in Kyoto, Japan, entitled, “Shatter, Emptiness and Divine Indwelling Presence: Beyond the ‘essentialism’ of Plato’s Anima Mundi,”. In 2017, he presented a paper in New York at The Journal of Analytical Psychology XIV International Conference on Dissociation: Trauma and the Self, entitled, “Clemency on the way to the gallows: death, dreams and dissociation.”

For the past twenty years the study of Kabbalah has been of central concern. His ongoing interests lie in the intersections and gaps between inter-analytical perspectives, post-modern philosophy, theology and mystical traditions.
